Kokeshi dolls (pronounced ko-kesh-ee) bring together centuries of Japanese design, their bold colours, distinctively uncomplicated lines and beautifully painted features are irresistible.

Each Kokeshi doll is named by the artist who created it and emanates its own individual spirit.

It is believed that they originated from the Tohoku region of Japan, where they were probably made by lathe-craftsmen who led a gypsy style life.

During the long cold snowbound nights they would have crafted these dolls from Cherry, Chestnut, Dogwood or Keyaki, then sold to visitors or given as tokens of love and friendship to friends or family.

Charming gifts of love and friendship from Japan.
